Alanya guide: castle, coast

A coastal town in eastern Antalya province, known for its peninsula castle and Kleopatra beach. This is not a tour timetable — it is a first-visit sketch of place, season and practical notes.

Hot, dry summers and mild winters. Sea season is usually May–October; July–August are the busiest months.

We do not list operator schedules, cove stops or prices here — those change by company and by day. Confirm before you book.

A town day

A loose order of things to see

  1. Morning

    Castle or tower

Inner castle or the Red Tower before the heat. Water, hat, proper shoes.

  2. Midday

    Beach or Damlataş

Swim at Kleopatra or a short cave stop. Little shade — sunscreen.

  3. Afternoon

    Bazaar and harbour

Centre streets and the quay. Crowds and haggling are normal in summer.

  4. Evening

    Promenade

The harbour cools down. Sunset shows the peninsula from the west beach or the water.

  5. Another day

    Dim River

Cooler water in the valley. It is a separate outing — do not leave the return until late in peak traffic.

The peninsula: castle, tower, shipyard

Alanya’s outline is the peninsula. Seljuk walls climb to the inner castle; the steps are steep in the heat, so water and closed shoes help. From the sea the walls sit on the rock.

On the harbour side, the 13th-century Red Tower (Kızılkule) and the medieval shipyard next to it are the two easiest historic stops. Museum hours shift with the season — check the board at the door.

Kleopatra, Damlataş, the harbour

West of the peninsula, Kleopatra beach is fine sand and a full hotel line, busy in summer. East and west of town the coast is a strip of hotels; the bazaar and harbour are walkable from the centre.

Damlataş Cave sits near the beach — damp, cool, a short stop. The harbour is an evening walk. “Secret coves” are a common sales line; wind and boat traffic do not grant the same headland every day.

Dim River, cave, neighbourhoods

East of the centre, the Dim River valley is where people go for cooler water and riverside cafés in summer. Dim Cave is a separate visit; it is cool inside and the floor can be slick.

The coastal line reads, roughly east to west: Mahmutlar, Kargıcak, Kestel, Oba, the centre, Konaklı, Avsallar, Okurcalar. Distances look short; summer traffic stretches them.

Getting about, season, practical

The nearest airport is Gazipaşa-Alanya (GZP); Antalya (AYT) has a wider flight network. Dolmuş minibuses run the coast road. Currency is the Turkish lira; cards are common, cash still helps in small shops.

Midday shade is scarce. Shoulders and knees covered are expected in some mosques and sites. Sea and outdoor activities are part of the region; whether a trip runs that day depends on weather and numbers.

For a summer day

  • Water, hat, high-SPF sunscreen
  • Swimwear and a towel
  • Closed, grippy shoes for the castle
  • A cover-up for mosques and some museums
  • Card and some cash (TRY)
  • ID or a passport copy
